Called Magi, the Three Kings or just Wise Men, these gentlemen dropped off expensive gifts to Jesus around the time birth in Bethlehem then just disappeared back out of the Bible. They make an especially picturesque subject around Christmas time. Commentary literature generally places these men as coming from various areas in Persia though from Christmas cards they have been depicted from all sorts of regions of the world. One of the possible compelling motivations for Jesus visit the East was a desire to pay these persons a return visit. Here we see him in a throne room environment being approached by a monkey. The animal was introduced to give a certain atmosphere of "exotics." The drawing was ultimately rejected as monkeys and apes in general seem
too much a whimsical caricature men to be included in the series.
